A job advert that has been posted by West Midlands Police has caused a bit of a stir on social media.
The force is looking for an ‘Assistant Director Fairness & Belonging’ to join its team for a rather handsome remuneration package of £74,340 per year. That’s £6,195 per month, or, £1548 per week!
For that money, the force could recruit nearly four new police officers. Or maybe even purchase two brand new police cars?
But what does the ‘Fairness & Belonging’ department actually do and why does the force need one?
The job description asks: ‘Are you a forward thinking, creative individual looking to achieve ambitious outcomes? Do you have demonstrable ability to lead, develop and deliver a first class diversity and inclusion function?’
I think most of us would agree that ‘diversity and inclusion’ is a good thing.
But what many people on social media seem not to understand, is why good old common sense can’t be used to ensure ‘diverse’ and ‘inclusive’ outcomes?
Why do you need to pay an ‘Assistant Director’ £74k a year for this function?
And if the assistant director is on £74k a year, then how much is the ‘main’, or, ‘managing’ director on!? And why on earth does he/she need an assistant director!?
The advert continues: ‘We are looking to recruit a new Assistant Director, Fairness and Belonging to lead the implementation of the WMP Fairness and Belonging agenda, strategy and plan which underpins delivery of our workforce vision and values, and our ‘This Work Matters’ strategy.
One user on social media pointed out that, in their opinion, West Midlands Police ‘obvioulsy have more money than they know what to do with’.
But what do you think?
