Intelligent People Are More Likely To Swear

It’s Official: Intelligent People Are More Likely To Swear

Do you know that intelligent people, people just like you, are actually more likely to swear?

This fact was highlighted in a study that was carried out by researchers at the University of Rochester.

They interviewed 1,000 volunteers. During the interviews, they quizzed the volunteers about 400 common behaviours.

During their Q&A session with the enlistees, they discovered that there is a strong link between intelligence and swearing.

But are you surprised?

During the study, the volunteers who took part were asked by researchers about how often they performed a selection of 400 different behaviours.

They were also asked how often they manifested these behaviours.

Those with higher intellects were not only found to be more likely to swear but, rather bizarrely, they were also found more likely to walk around their house in the buff.

The findings of the study were published in the Personality and Individual Difference journal.

Did you know that another benefit of swearing, is that it can act as a natural stress relief?

Psychologists from the University of Keele conducted tests in which some participants were asked to swear before doing some rigorous exercise.

The psychologists found that swearing resulted in notable performance improvements compared with shouting ‘neutral’ words.

If you are yet to embrace the art of swearing fully, then there are books available on Amazon explicitly written about the ‘art’ of swearing

If you have an Audible account, then you can enjoy these books in all of their ‘audio’ glory when you are, for example, commuting to work in your car.

Talking about the research, Team leader Dr Richard Stephens said:

“We know from our earlier research that swearing makes people more able to tolerate pain.

“A possible reason for this is that it stimulates the body’s sympathetic nervous system – that’s the system that makes your heart pound when you are in danger.”
