WATCH | Girl Rescued By Ocean-Going Ferry After Floating Out To Sea On A Unicorn

A young girl had a fortunate escape from an almost inevitable tragedy after she was spotted by an ocean-going ferry as she floated out to sea on an inflatable unicorn.

The young girl, estimated to be around five-years-old, was spotted by the crew and passengers of the vessel around 1000 metres off the Greek coast.

The young girl had been playing in the sea on a beach in Antirio when sea currents and the wind blew her offshore.

A video posted on social media, filmed by one of the passengers on the ferry, shows the moment when the captain of the ferry and his crew pulled the girl out of the sea.

In the video (below), the crew can be seen to lower the ramp at the front of the large vessel before hauling the girl to safety.

Captain Karneses said that he was navigating his usual route when he received a call from the coastguard asking if he or any of his crew had spotted a girl floating on a giant inflatable unicorn.

He told Skai TV:

‘The child was flabbergasted.

‘She was terrified, and that’s why she grabbed so firmly onto her inflatable swing ring.

The captain played down claims that he was a ‘hero’. He said:

‘I’m obligated to do it, not because of the nature of my work, but as a person.

‘There is no need for someone to thank me. I did something that any one of us would do’.

Safety campaigners have long voiced their concerns regarding the use of inflatable toys on the sea.

It only takes a moderate current and slight winds for an inflatable toy to be taken out to sea; often with tragic consequences.
