The Tragic Case Of A Pregnant Elephant That Died After Eating A Firework-Stuffed Pineapple
If like me, you are an animal lover, then you will probably also feel a bit of heartache each time you hear about an animal as majestic as an elephant being killed.
For example, we feel the rage and anger every time we hear about a “hunter” slaying an elephant just so their deficient and defective ego can feel good about itself for a few seconds.
But elephants do not just have to worry about hunters and poachers as they try to survive in their natural habitats.
A 15-year-old elephant recently died in India after it ate a pineapple that had been packed with fireworks.
The majestic creature had ventured into a village in Kerala’s Silent Vally Forest looking for something to eat.
The pineapple had been placed where it was by a farmer who wanted to use it to scare off wild boar.
According to the New Zealand Herald, the elephant did not die straight away. Instead, the damage caused to its jaw meant that it could not eat and so it died of hunger.
Wildlife officials confirmed that the mother-to-be was found nearby in a river.
Mohan Krishnan wrote:
“She trusted everyone.
“When the pineapple she ate exploded, she must have been shocked not thinking about herself, but about the child, she was going to give birth to in 18 to 20 months.
“She didn’t harm a single human being even when she ran in searing pain in the streets of the village.
“She didn’t crush a single home.
“When we saw her she was standing in the river, with her head dipped in the water. She had a sixth sense that she was going to die.”
A Kerala Forest Department spokesperson told Sky News:
“It seems this elephant was very unfortunate and unlucky. In my 20 years of service, I have heard of three such cases in the past with elephants. It is very sad, and we are all very sad about it.”
Despite the best efforts of wildlife conservationists, they could not save the elephant, and she died shortly after being found.
