People Are Being Urged NOT To Panic Buy Hand Sanitiser

Posted by

Some stores of Boots are limiting the sale of hand sanitiser to two bottles per customer in an attempt to prevent stock of the antibacterial gel from running out.

The rush to buy bottles of hand sanitiser comes after the leader of the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that the virus could eventually become a pandemic.

As more cases of the virus are diagnosed, people are becoming increasingly worried about coronavirus.

So far, 39 people in the UK have tested positive for COVID-19 (the ‘new’ name given for coronavirus).

Globally, it is estimated that around 92,000 people have been infected with the disease. About 48,000 people have made a full recovery, and it is estimated that there have been approximately 3,200 deaths.

These figures roughly translate to a mortality rate of between 2-3% with many of the deaths being attributed to underlying health conditions and weakened immune systems.

This week, the Mirror reported that supplies of hand sanitizer are running low as people are buying them by the basket load.

Washing your hands in soap and warm water is just as sufficient according to advice being given by the NHS, as long as you wash your hands for at least 1 minute.

Helen Pidd, the Guardian’s north of England editor, tweeted a picture of a sign placed in the boots store at Leeds train station with the caption:

“Coronavirus panic has hit boots in Leeds station.”

A spokesperson for Boots said that there had been an increase in sales of the gel, but that stock was still available in warehouses for stores and online.

They also added:

“The best way to help prevent catching a virus is by making sure that you regularly wash your hands with soap, and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to prevent transmission from surfaces, especially after blowing your nose, sneezing and coughing.”
