MPs Pay Tops £82k As They Receive An Inflation-Busting Pay Rise Of 3.1%

From next month (April) MPs will receive a pay rise of 3.1%, according to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA).

The increase will mean that MPs basic pay will rise from £79,468 to £81,932 as from 1st April.

IPSA interim chair Richard Lloyd said:

“Our review of MPs’ staffing budgets in 2019 found demands on MPs’ offices were high, with staff doing difficult and stressful casework with constituents on a very wide range of problems.

“There was often high staff turnover, with salary levels below comparable roles elsewhere, based on independent benchmarked evidence.”

He added that many MPs were spending “relatively little time or money” on staff training, wellbeing and development.

“As a result, we have provided additional funding in MPs’ 2020-21 staffing budgets for staff training and welfare, security, and changes to the salary bands and job descriptions for MPs’ staff to bring them into line with the jobs they actually do,” he continued.

However, the news attracted an agitated response on social media.

Jordan Rushworth tweeted to say:

“Interesting that despite a host of MPs coming out publically expressing the discontent, even disgust that the general public has felt towards their conduct over the last parliament that they now feel it legitimate and credible to give themselves a pay rise”.

Clive Gritt MBE tweeted:

“MPs just gave themselves an above-inflation pay rise while the health sector is desperately fighting a global virus.

“Is this how society should function?”

John Dodd added:

“So MPs have awarded themselves yet another pay rise despite the possibility of mass unemployment due to COVID 19No doubt they will continue to claim and be awarded their generous expenses even if Parliament has to shut down for a time.

“The Westminster bubble is as strong as ever”.

  • It should be perfectly acceptable in that case for everyone to get a 3% pay rise!

Here we go again…. another pay rise whilst every one else has to be thankful for a job and grateful for employers offering diabolical zero contract employment. The contempt and hypocrisy this lot show for the rest of us is deplorable and smacks of such hypocrisy!!

  • Unbelievable! These parasites do nothing to justify the money they give themselves. I wish l could give myself a 3% payrise, plus a house and bonuses, example – £300 a day for sleeping in Parliament, and all paid for by the tax-payer. It’s an absolute disgrace, these so called Mp’s are nothing but vermin! They don’t represent or care about the people, only themselves! They make me sick and are traitors to the country, l am ashamed to be British, absolute bullshit!

Its time to have the biggest ever March on the Houses of Parliament and let them know enough is enough, They us we have to tighten our belts things are tight ever year yet year after year they get payrise after payrise, And then they claim expenses on everything from a paper clips to luxurious hotel while renting their second home out which they should be living in while away from home, And to top all those expenses they have subsidised meals and drinks, Its about time we did some about this once and for all, I worked 49 years and for what, A pension of £170 per week, I would like them to try and live off my pittance, And I grafted I was a miner for 22 years, They sit on their back sides and think they are badly done to, It makes my blood boil, Enough is enough it is time to fight back.
