While there is no link between ‘coronavirus’ and corona beer, unfortunately, we live in an era when ‘fake news’ is combined with peoples willingness to believe anything they read.
This has forced beer brand Corona to re-iterate that the current outbreak of coronavirus has not damaged its image nor its sales.
This was despite a survey from a company called ‘5W Public Relations’ that found that the exact opposite has been receiving widespread media coverage – i.e. that sales of the beer had dropped since the outbreak of coronavirus (although, this could be because fewer people are going out?).
I would have laughed if you had told me that nearly 40% of Americans would avoid buying the beer only because it (part) shares a name with ‘coronavirus’.
Where has all of the common sense gone!?
Maggie Bowman, senior director of communications for the beer division of Constellation Brands, which exports Corona to the US, told CampaignLive.co.uk:
“Despite the misinformation circulating, consumer sentiment and sales remain strong.
“Consumers understand there’s no linkage between the virus and our business.”
5W surveyed 737 American beer-drinkers over the age of 21 on Tuesday and Wednesday last week.
It found that 38% would not buy Corona beer under any circumstances, but only 4% of those who usually drink Corona would stop doing so.
The research also found that 14% said they wouldn’t order Corona in a public venue and 16% were confused about whether Corona is related to coronavirus.
It is unreasonable to assume that 331,002,651 Americans would share the same sentiment at the 737 people who were polled by 5W.
The poll only represents, wait for it, 0.00022% of the American population.
But when you consider that Google Trends showed a spike in searches for “beer virus” and “corona beer virus” between 26th Jan and 1st Feb, then it makes you genuinely worry about the future of humanity.
